It’s going to be an exciting week!

Star Trek Online has really hit it’s stride recently with their weekly episodes, so I’m very much looking forward to the third episode of the Deferi-Breen arc on Saturday.

Lord of the Rings Online free-to-play (or free-to-try as I like to think of it) launch starts on Friday, the 10th, but I’ll be in headstart on the 8th, which is for current subscribers and F2P beta players. While, I’m looking forward to getting into the new zone, I’m still ambivalent about the store and LUA changes. Still, the sooner the changes launch, the sooner we’ll see how it impacts the Landroval server community.

My Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions preorder is in the mail. Of all of the super heroes in the Marvel and DC universes, Spider-Man has always been my favorite, and I’m really hoping that this game will be more like Spider-Man 2 and not Web of Shadows.

I finally finished all of the available Mass Effect 2 DLC last week, just in time to pickup and play the Lair of the Shadow Broker which should release today. Like I mentioned last week, my excitement level tripled when I saw the trailer for the new content, it looks epic.

As if all of the gaming stuff wasn’t enough, I got an email from Amazon promising that my Kindle should arrive this week. I’m looking forward to spending some time with it and see if this whole ebook thing is for me or not.

I’m interested in hearing how LotRO F2P turns out, but EQ2X is everything I want in an MMO at the moment. Plus the fact that they’re giving all the of the solo content away up to level 80 means it will be the cheaper option as well. At least LotRO will be there when I eventually get bored.

I’ve been following yours and Yeebo’s coverage of EQ2X and it sounds like it’s working out pretty well. I’ve not been tempted to try it yet though, since I know I’ve got several characters on the normal servers that I’d rather play if I went back. That server separation is a big hurdle.

The whole F2P marketing for LotRO is a bit off, in my mind, I think they’d have been more successful by saying it was free to try, or something similar to how Mythic markets their eternal demo. From my understanding of how the program is setup, you’ll always hit a certain point where you’ll have to spend at least a little bit of money. The game’s really not set up to allow players to combat grind for XP to level, so at some point once a character out levels the free quests they’re going to have to buy/spend some Turbine Points. Granted my knowledge is a few weeks out of date, since I haven’t been following the beta program too closely.

I think the episode content additions is a great touch. As Chris and Riknas talked about on the latest Multiverse, I am really surprised that more MMO’s don’t add this type of content. It doesn’t seem that hard to create and implement, yet has such a positive effect on the community’s on going enjoyment of the game.

If the positive response to STO’s weekly episodes continues, I think we’ll see more MMOs will try it out.

It’s not more common because it requires a developer to announce a schedule and then stick to it. That’s a tricky thing to do in the software world, and MMO gamers are fairly unforgiving about broken promises. Plus the weekly episodes are a very natural fit for an TV base IP, and somehow having a “next episode” to look forward to makes it feel just a bit more Trek-ish to me.

I think I would have completely missed that the headstart for LOTRO was today if it wasn’t for your article. So I guess I have you to thank for my latest post too 😛

And also, I may be looking for a new kinship. Is yours recruiting by any chance? I would prefer to play with people I know if I can…

        Glad to have helped. 🙂

The Council is always recruiting, hop on over to the applicants forum and fill out the (very short) membership app. It’s a combination introduce yourself and I’ve read the rules to not be a jerk. After that you just need to ping an officer in game for an invite (there’s a list of them on the applicant forum).
