So I was reading through my RSS feeds yesterday and caught this bit from Destructoid which reported that Mass Effect 3 was delayed until Q1 2012. I wasn’t happy about it but I figured if Bioware needs more time to make a quality game, then I’d just have to show some patience. Then I ran across this Gamasutra article which went into some more detail behind the delay.

“This franchise is a personal favorite of mine,” said EA CEO John Riccitiello of the BioWare-developed conclusion to the epic sci-fi trilogy.

“One of the things the team up at Edmonton has done is…essentially adjust some of the gameplay mechanics and some of the features, which you’ll see at E3, that can…essentially address a far larger market opportunity [than Mass Effect 1 or2].”

According to EA’s Frank Gibeau, the now-delayed game’s E3 presence will reveal “some feature innovation and some new ways to play.”

Nothing about that sounds good to me. It sounds like EA is getting a bit more hands-on with the franchise and I don’t expect that to turn out well. Hopefully, I’m blowing this out of proportion. If so, I’ll be very happy about being wrong.

Huh, I think that’s the first time I’ve ever agreed with Andrew.

Yeah… pretty much that statement means what it always has in the past. They are going to sell out their fanbase to make more money to the console shooter crowd 🙁 Reaching a wider market, means diluting your game in the process.

I really wonder what they can do to widen the market. I thought they did quite a bit between 1 and 2 to make the combat more shooter-ish and make better use of cover. I’m thinking they’re trying to figure out a way to shoehorn multiplayer into the game, in order to extend it’s lifespan, something like what happened with Bioshock 2. You know, since that turned out so well.

i’d rather see what they have to say before getting antsy, besides it probably has something to do with shepards new abilities to jump and climb ladders etc.

Had I only seen the Destructoid article I’d be fine, but the comments from Riccitiello says quite a bit about what they’re intending to do. If this was the Bioware people saying that they had some issues to address or ideas to enhance the game that would be one thing, but when a (or in this case, the) senior executive of a company shows an interest in a project, that never turns out well.
