As promised yesterday, I’ve uploaded a couple of videos to Youtube.

Not ground combat related, but here’s a quick peek at the new animated loading screen. It’s a minor thing, but I like that it adds a bit more Trek feel of the game.

Next, here’s two quick snippets and one longer one of the new ground combat. The first is from Stranded in Space, the remastered mission where you rescue the crew of the Azura. The second and third are from Collateral Damage,a Borg mission on Hotep IV in Gamma Orionis.

Finally, I cut together a series of clips showing the new FX for the different weapon types. I didn’t try to rotate through all of the different damage types, so most of the clips are for Tetryon and there’s two Antiproton, but it does show all of the new primary and secondary attacks.

I think I’d like to have those dual pistols. 🙂

I’d also like to change my comments on PWE buying out Cryptic some. After looking at the items and prices in the cash shop for STO on top of a subscription cost, I think PWE’s cash shops would be considered cheaper in comparison. Ouch! If PWE has Cryptic switch STO to a F2P payment model then this game will be a regular on my list.

I’m having a lot of fun just playing an hour or so per day, when I can. I think this is probably one of the few MMO games I really don’t think about leveling in, just jump in to do some ship combat and a little looking around at new places. Did a sneak run through some of the non-Fed sectors, just to see the bigger class enemy ships without getting instantly blasted to pieces.

I’m already about to hit Lt Cmd today, mostly from just doing patrol missions and not even thinking about levels; although I’m probably doing missions my slow little tugboat of a ship is way underpowered for, but an early (first day playing) drop of Quantum torp and dual disruptors (paired with powerful aft phasers) has seen me through so far.

As far as I’m concerned, not thinking about leveling is a good thing. It (hopefully) means you’re having fun with the journey and not just trying to slog through to get to the destination.

Doesn’t it? I’m still amazed at how improved it is.

I’d been looking forward to this for a long time. Ground combat in STO has never been very robust, like you could pretty much just point and shoot if you wanted. But I liked it, because by utilizing all the hotkeys and features, I could actually make it into my own personal mini-game to see how fast I could react. Still, at this point, any changes they can make would be a welcome improvement.

I used to like ground combat more towards the first half of the game, but it seems like especially at the admiral levels you get to a point where it’s a lot of running backwards to stay away from melee enemies. The Yackety Sax is often playing in my head during ground missions.
