I pre-ordered the standard edition of SWTOR from Amazon. I wanted the digital version but it’s only available from Origin.com and I’ve already talked about how I feel about that. I’ve also applied to the Multiplaying group’s guild, Delusions of Grandeur. It feels odd to me to be applying to a guild for a game that I can’t even play yet but apparently it gives the guild some kind of benefits so I went ahead and pitched in.

All in all, that is the most attention I’ve given to TOR in months. Now that there’s a release date, of sorts, I feel like I should be excited. I feel like I should be impatiently waiting for the December. But I’m not, I’m much more excited for the upcoming Arkham City. It’s odd because Star Wars was my first scifi love. I was incredibly excited for SWG when it came out. It took me weeks after watching the Phantom Menace to admit to myself that i didn’t like it.

Maybe it’s prequelitis? I gave up on them after watching Attack of the Clones. I’ve never seen Episode 3 and can’t even tell you what the movie title is, or care to Google it. I did watch some of the animated Clone Wars series and enjoyed it but a lot of the magic was lost. Fumoggin midichlorians.

Maybe it’s trust? I was a huge fan of KotOR but never played the sequel after reading about all of the bugs and half finished story, so I should be ecstatic that BioWare is doing a real sequel. Maybe if TOR were a single-player game I would be, but it’s not and I’m not convinced either BioWare or EA are up to the challenge of managing an MMO after seeing how poorly DragonAge’s patching and community were managed.

Maybe I’ve gotten too good at countering the hype?

In the end it doesn’t really matter. I’ve pre-ordered, I’ll be playing at launch, and I have friends that are excited enough for ten of me.

Lots of interesting points. I suspect you are right to go in with low expectations. It would be funny if you end up enjoying the game more than the hype crowd specifically because you don’t expect anything from the game.

I actually did see all three prequel movies. I wanted to see the series out to the end. In some ways I wish I never saw them. My opinion of the original trilogy was actually diminished because of the prequels. Of course, only having the special editions available doesn’t help either.

Now I’m all depressed. Thanks, Blue. 🙂

You know that very thing has happened to me already with both Champions Online and Rift.

The only pre-launch guild I ever did was Casualties of WAR, and we see how well that turned out.

I’ll play the game, but will I stick with it? I’m still ticked off at LOTRO doing +10 levels, and haven’t played since the announcement. I can barely be bothered to play MMOs right now, so knowing that MMOs are by far the easiest to burn out on, I’m not seeing why I should pre-commit to one. Especially one that will be just like all the rest: everyone jumps on the bandwagon, loves it to death for a month, plays single-player, maybe reach level cap, then a month or two down the road everyone quits and moves on to the next new shiny. I love reading everyone’s blogs, but I’m not going to commit to a guild — or even to purchasing a game — for anyone anymore, knowing they won’t be around long.

I’m also picky about guild names too. Assuming it’s a game I care enough to do my “inner RP” (and I’m sure it will be) so far none of the guild names I’ve seen passed around on Twitter are even the least bit appealing.

I’m fully expecting the same thing actually, get in play for a few months and then go on to something else. That could change of course, but since it’s (probably) a sub game, I won’t be able to drop in occasionally like I do the other ones I play.

As far as the guild, Delusions of Grandeur is not bad, but I’m purely joining for the people, at least until everyone burns out. 😉

The prequals bit, to be sure. Considered as pure visual spectacles they were impressive. However, that’s all Lucas seemed to care about. Considered as narratives they were utter failures. None of the characters were believable or compelling. In fact the movies seemed to almost be actively attempting to sabotage some of the more compelling elements of the original trilogy.

More on my blog, this became an obvious post at some point.

I should add, once it got up to four paragraphs…I was like “Yeah, this is a blog post” 🙂

I’ve been completely neutral about my expectations of SwTOR especially given it will be one the biggest MMO launch in a very long time. I’ve seen all the movies as well, but i couldn’t really remember much at this point since its been a long time since seen any the films. Since the game has been in development i’ve read almost nothing about the game other than what i read over at CECE’s blog on Fridays. So i’ve just stayed neutral about it all.

So with the pre-orders now out i haven’t given much thought to any of it since i don’t have much expectation of the game either way. I’m sure i’ll play it, probably with MP.net just like did for RIFT. With my expectations about the game and immune to all the hype being somewhat neutral about it all if i buy the game and when i guess it probably be just the digital download version. At this point i’m not even worried if thats not even available either. I’m sure it will be available when or soon after it launch if not before if BioWare change their mind.

I think people are rather in love with Star Wars than SWTOR. Some are in love with WoW and if they expect more of the same, then they are probably right.

I am in love with neither. Or well, I really love(d) Star Wars. But there is something in me that wished the prequel Episode I-III that made the first Star Wars movie chronologically IV never happened. Lucas sold so out and has shown that at a certain point more money and more technology don’t necessarily make for a better movie. Also, we all have grown older.

Still, I tried dating Han Solo style (which has shown me the difference between movie and reality hrhr) and I am a huge fan of the Empire, TIE Fighters and their characteristic sound and all that. So The Empire Strikes Back >>> Attack of the Clones. After all these years. Heck, I would have trouble pointing out my favorite of the original trilogy while for the new trilogy I would have to wonder which one was the least horrible.

I still have my Millenium Falcon and Han Solo and a Stormtrooper at home. I just deleted a rant which starship daddy didn’t buy me. Interestingly I realize I didn’t place Lord Vader besides them, hmmm (time for psychoanalysis). Luke was always a Fluke to me, that’s for sure. Don’t care for magic farmboys. 🙂

What has this all to do with SWTOR? The setting is the TOCR – The Old Crap Republic. Or according to SWTOR lore X years later, in a time where Jedi and Sith somehow duke it out. At least the Emperor and Lord Vader are already there! If they are smart they put in TIE Fighters, which are a lot more stylish and iconic than all the unmemorable attack fighters of the Old Republic.

Bioware is going to write their own chapter of the Star Wars saga, very much like Cryptic does somewhat with Star Trek at the moment. There is hope that it turns out better than I expect, as my first reaction after playing Guild Wars 1 in the prerelease/preorder phase was to cancel my preorder (yep, in this time years ago you got pre-access without yet having bought the game just for preordering!) and in the very last moment 2-3 days later to order the CE nevertheless. Probably one of my best gaming decisions ever.

“I have friends that are excited enough for ten of me.”

This is exactly what I miss at the moment. nobody in my circles wants to play SWTOR. I am kinda hungry for a new MMO, but I’m not exactly a big fan of the SW world (although I like the old movies). in general, I prefer fantasy over sci-fi. So, what I’d need to roll anyway would be 1-2 voices pushing me to come along and join them. low expectations are almost always better, anyway.

    WTB friends with pre-order!

This game has been so overhyped it’s ridiculous, can’t see how it can possibly live up to it.
