STO Halloween Episode

I haven’t been gaming much recently because of a one-two combo of NaNoWriMo and Work. So I’m just now checking out the featured episode “What Lies Beneath.”

Crypic has really done a phenomal job on this mission. The light drone mechanic, the atmosphere created by the environment, the dialog including the new less intrusive dialog popups, it’s all absolutely top notch impressive work.

Since I’m late to the party, I’ll leave the play by play to Tipa and Gamer Chick (warning spoilers on those links). If you play STO and you haven’t tried out the TheĀ Devidians featured episode series, you’re missing out on some excellent content.

Interesting. The more I hear about STO, the more I feel that it is a much better executed game than Champions Online is. It is almost as it CO serves as a litmus test for anything they want to try out. The experiments with the best results are then recreated in STO.

Still, I won’t pick up STO just yet, I’d rather wait a bit and see if the rumors are true, and like CO, if they go F2P.

Actually, I think that there’s been a bit more experimentation going on on the Trek side than the Champions side. The featured episodes with their weekly releases and the forthcoming Foundry (for user generated content).

As far as F2P goes, Champions doesn’t launch until January (or Feb/Mar) and I would be very surprised if Cryptic decided anything about STO until they’ve given their CO experiment a few months to develop. Then again, I assumed they’d watch LotRO’s F2P results for more than just a month or two. So I don’t expect to see Cryptic make any STO announcements before May or June. That may change if they see a huge increase in revenue in January. I don’t see that happening though. LotRO is a three year old game with lot’s of content, but CO is a 1 year old game with only enough content (now) to comfortably get to level cap once.
