Making a character in City of Heroes and Champions Online is a creative endeavor for me, if I had any talent for art at all it would very much be like creating a comic book. I don’t just throw together a random set of costume pieces, pick an available name, and charge into the game. Sometimes, a hero name will spark my imagination, sometimes it’ll be a power, but usually it’s a specific costume piece.

Silver Hunter in the Paragon Age

The City of Heroes version of Silver Hunter was inspired by the head texture you see pictured below. The name, the powers, and the back-story all came afterwards. The texture made me think of a combination of the Vision, the Martian Manhunter, and the Silver Surfer.

Silver Hunter in the Champion Age

When Champions Online launched, the Silver Hunter was the first hero I made. I originally tried to duplicate my CoH costume but couldn’t find any matching textures. Instead, I focused on the concept of an alien sentient android and started over. It took a few iterations, but I’m very happy with how the CO version turned out.

Back-Story from CoH to CO

You can also see that the Silver Hunter’s back-story has changed quite a bit when you compare the short description I banged out for his Hero Registration card to the full story or the summary I’ve written for his Champions bio.

Incredible, this is your character? It was done so well, at first I thought the last post was the profile of a character in the game lore, because it was so in depth and detailed.

And funny how you had a character named “Blue Ram”…my character in Champions was Crimson Gazelle 😛

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it. The last two days’ posts were pretty personal to me, so I’m really enjoying the feedback.

Yup Silver was my second main in CoH, Blue Ram being the first. Yesterday’s story is the kind of stuff going through my head when I play. I have similar stuff for some of my other Champions heroes and my main in LotRO. I like to think of it as internal role-playing. 😉

That’s funny you have similar naming scheme. I’ve had to try and control myself a bit with hero naming in order to not have them all be color/noun names.

I did it because I’ve always liked the heroes/villains that have names that follow this pattern — Scarlet Witch, Red Skull, etc.

I also named my character the way I did because after I finished making her, she ended up with these devilish looking horns. I didn’t want to name her anything satanic, so I chose the most innocent little creature to name her after instead! Man, your posts are making me miss Champions 🙂

Blue Ram started the same way. There are a pair of ram horns in the CoH hero builder that I really liked and I basically built the character around that. I actually made him before I picked up the Blue Kae gamer tag too. 🙂

Well now that you’ve capped out in AoC, maybe you need to try something different? Muahahaha.

I love it. Transfering a character from COX to CO is a challenge, but it’s very rewarding when you see it with those new graphics.

I was really disappointed originally because I’d hoped to basically clone the CoH version and just have newer/better graphics. I went through a lot of iterations before I hit on the costume pieces I used for the face, it all fell into place from there. Now, I find I prefer the CO version to the original, it just fits my original character concept better.
