This month’s Ask Cryptic has some especially good tidbits of information.
One of my wishlist items for 2011 was to have ship-wide uniforms. It looks like that feature is in the works for Season 4 (maybe) or Season 5 (definitely). Even better is that Season 5 is also planned to include the ability to use the Foundry to customize your ship’s interior.
Even more exciting was this goal:
Our goal for Feature Episodes in 2011 is to get out at least 5 series while still working on other parts of the game. If we can do more, we absolutely will.
If they can manage five series this year, I’ll be a very happy player.
There’s a ton of other good information and some interesting hints that cover KDF, if/when the Romulan faction will be added, possible new ship classes, new uniform pieces, and much more. I highly recommend reading it if you want to get an idea of where the game is headed this year.
What i’m actually happy for as a previous STO player that played at launch is that the game is moving along and appear to be succeeding after all this time. As well as keep adding new content. Cheers to STO.
Any my Captain and spaceship is still lost in some cosmic anomaly somewhere…
Are you trying to tie Voyager’s record? 🙂
Five episodes a year would be impressive. Glad they still have enough resources focused on STO for that to seem like a reasonable goal.
Yeah, I was really surprised by that goal. It’s quite a bit more ambitious than I expected given the big gap between Series 2 and 3. I’m excited to see them try though.
Love how transparent he is with player questions, though it does sound like they have a gazillion things “on the table”! And I was like hmm at this quote here:
“The latest Feature Episode series is starting to delve into their story and show just how fractured their people are at the moment. Perhaps the Romulan Empire will split into multiple factions where one will join the Federation and the other the Klingon Empire… That’s an interesting idea.”
I think that WOULD be interesting. Though one would think that’s something they have to work out with the folks at Paramount. That’s one problem with games steeped heavily in an IP, I’m sure the STO creative team gets their hands tied a lot from clashes with those in charge of the brand.
I thought that was a pretty interesting idea as well. With the Romulan homeworld destroyed I don’t think it would be a huge change to allow at least one faction to join the Federation. Afterall, that’s basically happened with the Ferengi and Cardassians, although aside from Klingons the Romulans have always been the “big bad” in the Trek universe. They’re not really needed as a major enemy anymore since the advent of the Borg and the Undine, not to mention the possible return of the Iconians.
Being tied to an IP is definitely has it’s pros/cons, as both Cryptic and Turbine are well aware. Generally I think it’s more of a strength, since there’s some pre-existing emotional investment that people have and a chance to bring in players who wouldn’t normally try out MMOs. I like to think of it as adding a challenge to the designers to work within the IP’s framework.
