In what feels like an annual event, Star Trek Online is getting a new Executive Producer. Stephen Ricossa, aka Salami Inferno, is taking over command from Stephen D’Angelo. Who took over after Daniel Stahl left, both times, who took over when Craig Zinkievich, the original EP, changed rolls within the company. From interviews I’ve heard Ricossa is a huge Trekkie, something he also mentions in his first EP post, and I’ve been a fan of the way he communicates with the player community in his former Lead Producer role. Hopefully that doesn’t change now that he’s in the big chair.

A good sign of that is he finished with a big teaser for the next big update:

With the launch of Season 10 Sector Space will be comprised of only three maps, with each one representing a quadrant that exists in STO.

Woot! This is something I’ve been wanting since the game launched. I’m a little apprehensive about the details as this will have to have a big impact on the chat and duty officer systems, but it will be so nice to be able to set a course and not have to worry about getting stopped at arbitrary walls within sector space. I’m also curious to see how exactly they split the sectors up into the three quadrants. Alpha and Beta quadrants have always been treated as one in Trek books/TV/movies.

I heard about this. How awesome, right?! Finally, a single unified space! My guess with the 3 maps are the Alpha Quadrant (Klingon, DS9, Romulan, Breen, all of it), the Delta Quadrant (have to take the gateways to get there anyway), and Borg Space (again, only accessible through a gateway). New sectors would most likely be of the gateway type as well, so they can be added on that way. What I’m curious about is what about the in-between planets? Like Ferenganar, Betazed, etc.? They were considered simply outside the sectors we were flying in. No more boundaries, are they planets going to show up now? And right, Duty Officer missions may be a little trickier now… but I wonder… the area missions could be implemented within an area of a certain place, like the Gamma quadrant trade materials being around DS9… so you’d have to be within a certain radius to pick them up. But then that leaves a metric ton of generic missions everywhere else… could this lead to, say, a greater online component? Doffs through the Gateway interface?

That breakdown makes more sense to me, the word quadrants had me immediately thinking of Alpha, Beta, Delta which doesn’t quite work for Orionis.

As far as some of the missing planets like Betazed, I have a vague memory that Cryptic would add those when those sectors were added. So since sector space is going to be more open I can see them adding those planets and possibly setting them up as Foundry doors. I’ll be surprised if we see any content on them beyond community stuff. I think they’ll stay focused on the Delta Quadrant for at least the next update.

Hey, just setting this up for email subscription. I just got back into the game recently. Is there a release date for season 10?

      None that I’ve heard.
